Our Take:
Next to buying a car, booking your hotel is almost always the worst feeling ever. You complete your booking feeling like you’ve been raked over the coals and, well, in many cases you actually have. We’ve booked our trips on endless websites and, by far, our best experience was with Hotels (.com). Not only were the prices pretty low, but we were actually able to get an extra $100 off our booking because they were running a pretty amazing deal at the time.

But you know where they really come in hand (for us, at least) is their rewards points. We know, that sounds boring. Who wants to talk about points. But here’s the thing, when you sign up for their free rewards program you’ll get one “stamp” for every night you stay somewhere. After 10 “stamps” you’ll get 1 night for free somewhere. And there are no blackout dates and over a half-million properties all over the world.
You may not be thinking of points when you’re booking, but they come in handy at the best times. For example, we wanted to book a last minute weekend trip to NYC at the beginning of December. Of course that’s the worst time to visit NYC due to the insane prices (and amount of people). Properties that were normally around $500 night were now being booked for $800+. Yes, really. We ended up using our “points” and got our Friday and Saturday night for free. Unheard of. In this instance it, literally, saved us about $1,600. Ever since then we only book through Hotels .com. No reason to look anywhere else!
The Deal With the Deals:
Believe it or not there actually are a ton of deals happening all the time. The tough part, at times, is finding where they all live and when you should book your trip.
Many people claim you should book everything on a Wednesday, because that’s when the prices ‘reset.’ Sadly, that’s pretty much a made up concept. According to a recent Trip Advisor research report, the actual best time (overall) to get the best deal on your hotel is one-month prior to your planned vacation stay. On average, travelers who book within that month timeframe can save around 15%. Now, that’s without a regular sale or promo deals.

The Deal With Promo Codes:
Ok so here’s the deal and, honestly, the ugly truth. We’ve researched over 15 of the top promo code sites. Literally, none of their coupons worked. At all. We’re not sure if they all expired, if they’re user generated and made up, or what. Maybe we just had some bad luck. But, Hotels.com doesn’t give out promo code offers to other sites (we don’t have them here either).
The good news, however, is that they do have some of their own exclusive codes and discounts you can get directly from their site. It’s really the best way to save. In the past we’ve seen $100 rebates and even 10% off for a wide variety of people like first line responders, military, teachers, students, and so many more.
