It’s the most important time to educate ourselves on race, racism, and education. These best-selling book recommendations are a great way for any child and adult to start the process.
Fact: I am white. There’s certainly some truth to the idea that we shouldn’t be recommending a reading list that deals with racism in America (and throughout the world). With the horrific events surrounding George Floyd, we didn’t feel like we could just sit by and not at least try to be a tiny part of the overall solution. And that, in our opinion, comes from educating ourselves. We’re not talking at you, by the way, we’re directing this to ourselves too. Knowledge and education is power.
We’re ashamed to say that when researching some of the most popular books on racism, there were many (in fact, most) that we have never read. We’re going to change that starting now. In fact, even worse, is when it came to books for kids we hadn’t heard of any of them. Unacceptable. We consulted with a variety of resources to help us select the books that we’d like to recommend to you as a guide or a “must-read” if we’re being honest. We researched lists from sites like The New York Times, Amazon’s Top Seller List, and some top colleges and universities in the US.
We’re breaking down the list (in no real particular order) for adults first and then kids next. We are, however, starting out with one of the most recommended across multiple credible sources. Let’s all be better, starting right now.
